Department of Epidemiology participates in designing and implementation of specific programs targeting usual public health issues and in some emerging new public health challenges. Besides mentioned activities, we additionally perform scientific research in epidemiology and public health domain.

Moreover the Department educates vulnerable groups and general population about main public health problems and protective behaviors. Promoting health education of general population and particularly vulnerable groups.

On daily basis we continuously cooperate with sanitary inspection and all relevant public health institutions (Croatian Institute of Public Health, Croatian Institute of Health Insurance, Department of Health, and Croatian Institute for Toxicology) as well as with other institutions of health care system.

The Department has four divisions:

1. Division of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology

2. Division of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases Epidemiology

3. Division of Disinfection, Disinfestation and Pest Control

4. Division of Food Safety System


1. Division of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology

Division collects and analyzes data on communicable diseases, identifying their characteristics in in order to prevent spreading of infectious diseases. Within the Division different preventive programs are developed in order to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases. Division also monitors vaccination coverage (City of Zagreb County), and intervenes if the vaccination coverage is not achieved. Center for Vaccination and Traveler Disease Prevention is a designated WHO Center for yellow fever vaccination, except yellow fever vaccination patients also have the possibility to get pre-travel consultation and vaccination. 

2. Division of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases Epidemiology

Division carries out activities of monitoring and epidemiological evaluation based on different risk factors, morbidity and mortality and risk factors for selected priorities in the field of chronic non-communicable diseases. The Division is vital in planning and conducting different health promotion programs with all relevant stake holders. It participates in the roll out of National cancer screening programs of breast cancer and colorectal cancer. In cooperation with the Health Office of the City of Zagreb, the Division conducts Program of preventive mobile mammography for women who are not targeted by National screening program.

3. Division of Disinfection, Disinfestation and Pest Control

This Division monitors environmental conditions that can increase risks for vector-borne diseases. The program supports public and private pest management programs and enforces vector control laws when needed through several activities:

  • Monitor conditions that can lead to breeding of pests including garbage accumulation, neglected and overgrown vegetation and stagnant water.

  • Support the control of mosquito populations in public facilities through safe integrated pest management techniques.

  • Responds to complaints regarding pest infestation.

  • Provides information and education to individuals and communities regarding pest control.

4. Division of Food Safety System

Division provides food safety education and certification programs for food handlers. It also performs implementation and auditing of HACCP System.
